These 10 Pinterest marketing best practices have made me grow my account dramatically over the last few weeks. Take a look at the chart below. The most important statistic is the one on the right, for my domain: brianelliottblog.com. This is the blog on which I have concentrated my efforts.
As you can see the rapid spike. This was because of the 10 Pinterest marketing tips I will list below. I have found that if I continue to follow this blueprint, my success will continue.
Now let me look at all the 10 Pinterest marketing strategies.
1. CREATE KEYWORD BASED PINTEREST BOARDS
One of the first things I did was to create keyword based boards. This is because I recognised that Pinterest is a search engine. Now we know that people search on search engines using keywords. Therefore, calling your board whatever you like is not best practice. Indeed, we have to think Pinterest SEO.
How I Do It – I name the boards after categories on my blog. Consequently, this makes the boards synchronize with my blog so both can grow together. This is a very powerful Pinterest strategy for bloggers.

2. CREATE COLOUR SCHEME FOR PIN
Visual appeal is very important in branding. It is just as important in building your presence on Pinterest. Note that boards with a consistent colour scheme will get more engagement and followers. This is a very important Pinterest marketing strategy.
How I Do It – I use the same colours from my blog to create my Pinterest colour scheme. Remember to bear this in mind when choosing a colour scheme for your pins/boards:
- Reddish orange images 2x more likely to be repinned than blue ones.
- Images with multiple dominant colours get 3x more repins than images with single dominant colour.
- Medium light images are pinned 20x more than dark images.
- Images that are 50% saturated had 10x more repins than those that were desaturated.
- Vertical images with an aspect ratio of between 2:3 and 4:5 had 60% greater repins than very tall pins.
- Images without faces had 23% more repins than images with faces.
3. RESEARCH KEYWORDS FOR BOARDS
Since Pinterest is a search engine, we have to create pins that people are searching for. Firstly, research the keywords in your niche and create pins based on these keywords. It is the same as creating articles on your blog based on keyword research.
How I Do It – I use several keyword tools, but I think the best strategy is to use Pinterest search. Just type your keyword and you will see the autofill suggestion. You can keep choosing keywords and keep drilling down. You will never exhaust the keywords. What’s most important, this is what people are searching for on Pinterest.
4. CREATE PINS
Create pins every day. Ideally, create at least 2-3 pins per day. The more pins you create and add to Pinterest, the more likely you are to get traffic back to your blog or website.
How I Do It – I create pins using the free tool called Canva. This may be the most important of all Pinterest marketing tools. They have pre-made layouts that can quickly be tweaked. Additionally, all your previously created pins are saved. You can re-use your designs and simply adjust a few elements. Over time, you can use Pinterest Analytics to determine the highest converting design.
5. HIDE PINS
This is extremely important. The more pins you have for each post, the more likely it is that you will get clicks back to your blog. However, because the pins are so large, having many may also slow down your page. You will be happy to know that there is a way you can hide them and have almost unlimited pins on your page. I will deal with how to safely hide your pins on another post. There is a popular way for hiding pins that is not “search engine friendly.”
6. JOIN FACEBOOK GROUPS
Because this was a brand new blog, I needed a community to help me get it started. I turned to Facebook groups. These groups have helped me tremendously. They provide lots of traffic providing mainly comments and social shares.
How I Do It – I search Facebook looking for blog promotion groups with several thousand members. I then join them. Some will ask you questions, others won’t. I will share my 2 of my favourite Facebook groups that have helped me grow on Pinterest.
7. PIN AT LEAST 5 TIMES PER DAY
Pinning consistently allows you to grow your views and followers over time. Not only that, but you keep your followers engaged. As a result, it is recommended that we pin at least 5 times a day.
How I Do It – The first work activity for me in the mornings is to check in on Pinterest and make a few pins. Throughout the day I will intermittently take a break and make a few pins.
In addition, in the Facebook groups, I usually pin some relevant pins from others in the community. I make sure that all the pins are tightly related to the board’s category. This will ensure that people will be more likely to follow me because of the relevant content.
8. SPACE OUT TIME OF PINNING (SCHEDULE PINS)
I must highlight an important point that flowed from the previous paragraph. Space out the time of the pins. Although the best time to pin on Pinterest is in the evenings, spread out the times of your pins. Not everyone comes on in the evenings. Spreading out the times of your pins exposes you to different segments of the Pinterest user population. The result is constant traffic throughout the day.
How I Do It – I use a pin scheduler (currently testing Tailwind). This is one Pinterest tool that users swear by. You may automatically schedule pins in advance for different time slots. This ensures you have pins going throughout the day.
9. JOIN PINTEREST GROUP BOARDS
Pinterest group boards are private boards created by pinners. These are essentially communities that can explode your Pinterest game. They may have thousands of members who help each other grow.
How I Do It – I get the lowdown on Pinterest group boards relevant to my niche from my Facebook groups. Here is a Facebook group dedicated to Pinterest group boards. Join this group and contact the board admins. They will ask you to follow them and give them your Pinterest email or Pinterest URL.
In addition, go to Pin Groupie. Search for group boards in your niche. Contact the admin (usually the first person you see in the group) and request membership to the group. Some will accept you, some won’t. You win some, you lose some. However, the ones you win could pay off dramatically.
10. USE PINIT CHROME BROWSER APP
As we continue the 10 Pinterest Marketing Tips, I will look at how to find images to pin. The PinIt app allows you to pin any image on any blog or website. This ensures that you never run out of things to pin.
How I Do It – Install the free PinIt app for Chrome.
