HOW TO WRITE THE PERFECT BLOG POST
How to write the perfect blog post? This is a question that comes from newbie bloggers and established bloggers as well.
If you are a newbie, you will want to know how to do it right. Established bloggers may be wondering what to do to get an edge in search engine ranking. Indeed, we should know the golden rule of blogging: “content is king.”
This is a step by step guide that will show you just how to create a blog post that is as close to perfect as possible.
Bear in mind that you are writing for both humans and search engines.
What do I mean? Humans will be reading so you need to evoke interest, educate, inform, entice, stimulate, motivate your readers.
For search engines, they will also be reading your content, but they require different “stimulation.”
We will see how to feed both.
INSTALL WP SEO BY YOAST WORDPRESS PLUGIN
Before we begin, let me first advise you to install WP SEO by Yoast. This is free and will be absolutely essential in understanding how to write the perfect blog post.
While you are writing, it will actually be your guide. It will tell you in real time how successful you are at creating a great blog post. It will also give you tips on what to do to improve your post as shown below.
STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO THE PERFECT BLOG POST
For this step by step guide on how to write the perfect blog post, I will start from researching what to write about.
Then next I will look on how to write the perfect post.
What do we do with the post once written in order to gain maximum benefits? That will come next, but first, let’s get started.
HOW TO FIND KEYWORDS FOR BLOG POSTS
Before you write, you first have to know what you are writing about.
Of course, you can simply write about what comes to mind. Well, that may be good for an ordinary blog post, but not for the perfect blog post.
To write the perfect blog post. it has to be based on keywords. What do I mean?
WHAT ARE KEYWORDS?
Keywords are single words or multi-word phrases that people use to search in search engines.
WHY USE KEYWORDS FOR TITLES?
We use keywords for titles because when people are searching for a term, we want to see our website appearing in search results for that term.
So, we use the keyword that people are searching for.
WHERE TO FIND KEYWORDS FOR BLOG POST TITLES
There are many ways to find blog post titles.
1. FINDING BLOG POST KEYWORDS: KEYWORD PLANNER
Let us see how to find a keyword optimized title using Google’s own, Keyword planner.
This tool gives you the average searches per month, the suggested bid for the keyword in Google Adwords, as well as the level of competition for each keyword.
Just input your keyword idea, and you will get suggestions.
What we want here is the keyword on which our blog post is based.
2. CHOOSING A BLOG POST TITLE
Done with that? After we have found the primary keyword for our post, let’s go to the next step and choose our blog post title.
For this step, we will look at 2 choices.
BLOG POST TITLE GENERATOR TOOL: ANSWER THE PUBLIC
This is a not so popular blog post title generator tool, but it is fast becoming one of my favourites.
Simply enter your keyword and you will get related questions that are being asked on the web.
The questions, of course, will include your keyword. Blog posts that answer questions really engage readers.
BLOG POST TITLE GENERATOR TOOL: RAELYN TAN’S “190+ Catchy Headlines / Blog Titles To Get More Attention”
This is a collection of catchy headlines in which you can fit in your keyword that we got from Google Keyword Planner.
What makes this list valuable, is that it is divided into categories. These categories are based on what you intend your blog post to achieve when someone reads.
So, there are ideas that play on fear, stir drama, give quick and easy fixes, instruct, and the list goes on. See Raely Tan’s “190+ Catchy Headlines / Blog Titles To Get More Attention.”
HOW TO CHOOSE HEADINGS AND SUBHEADINGS
So now we have our title, it is time to plan the headings and subheadings.
Once again, remember we are writing the perfect blog post so our headings will be keyword optimized. Here is how I do this.
Go back to Google Keyword Planner and input your blog post’s main keyword.
This will give us related keywords. Some of these can be used for headings and subheadings.
This is good for optimizing your blog post and helping you to rank for these minor keywords as well. It is also another way of finding LSI keywords. See below for Adding Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) Keywords.
HOW TO WRITE A PERFECT BLOG POST: USING SEO TITLE TAGS
Meta tags or title tags are instructions to search engines that tell them about the structure of your website or blog.
To us, they are simply bold headings, but to the search engines, it speaks to them.
Starting from H1 down to H6, it tells search engines about the importance of each topic that makes up a blog post.
The main title is H1. There should only be one H1 tag.
H2 is the next important heading, a sub heading of the title. H3 is a subheading of H2 and so on.
This post by Yoast will give you more heads up on the use of title tags.
WRITING THE PERFECT BLOG POST
Now it’s time to write! But before we start writing, make sure you have two things in place.
- WP SEO by Yoast – this will guide you in creating your search engine friendly content
- Grammarly (Google Chrome extension) – this will correct your grammatical errors
Write your content with the subheadings as a guide.
HOW TO SEO BLOG POST
After you have written the first paragraph, go down the blog page to WP SEO and input the following:
- SEO Title – Optimized title to include the main keyword
- Slug – optimized to include main keyword (unless the keyword contains stop words)
- Meta Description – (description to include the main keyword, preferably at the start of the description
- Focus Keyword – the main keyword
While writing, take note of the Grammarly grammar check. Optimize your content For it to show green in the end as shown by the “G” below at right.
OPTIMIZE BLOG POST LENGTH
In the old days, one could write a blog post of a few words and rank well. Today is the era of authority posts.
There is so much competition, Google is favouring long, authoritative posts. These posts cover a topic in great detail.
The minimum length of the content is now suggested to be 900 words. Indeed, to rank for some keywords, you may need to write over 4000 words!
For some content (especially when you have a video of the same keyword embedded), your posts need not be that long to rank well.
READ YOUR BLOG POST
Now, this is very important. You need to re-read your blog post. You will be surprised at how many errors you have made while writing.
What’s more, we will need to include the following step, which is to include LSI keywords.
ADDING LATENT SEMANTIC INDEXING (LSI) KEYWORDS
What are LSI keywords? See Related Post: What are LSI Keywords and Why Should You Use Them In Every Blog Post?
LSI keywords are keywords that search engines see as being closely related to the main keyword. They expect that these keywords will be included in a blog post based on your topic.
For example, an article on “modern track and field legends” one would expect that it must have the keyword: “Usain Bolt.” Without that essential keyword, search engines would not view it as being a valuable article.
Likewise for your blog post. If it does not have certain related keywords, it will not rank highly.
How do we find these keywords? We go to LSI Graph and enter our keyword.
HOW I ADD LSI KEYWORDS TO MY BLOG POSTS
To add LSI keywords to my blog post, I write down relevant keyword terms from LSI Graph. Next, I then sprinkle them in my blog post. This I do by inputting them at places where they sound natural and do not disturb the “natural flow” of my content.
I then embolden them. By doing this, they give viewers a sort of “punchline” that draws them to each bit of content. It removes the monotony of reading plain text, thereby adding visual interest.
For the search engines, it screams: “Hey, over here; this is what you’re looking for!”
HOW TO WRITE A PERFECT BLOG POST: ADD IMAGES
After you are satisfied with your content? Then you should add images. Why?
- Using Images increase visual interest and improve bounce rate
- Adding images let you rank in Google image search (important to optimise images)
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT IMAGES
Images are important when you attempt to write the perfect blog post. However, there are some things you should know:
- The images should be optimized to not be bigger than the theme requires. If so, they will slow down the page’s loading speed. This is bad for SEO. Find out the perfect image dimensions from your theme provider.
- They should not only be the correct dimensions but should be compressed to reduce pixel size. This will improve loading speed.
- Just as you do for your content, your images should also be SEO optimized by title, alt text and description
- Do not use copyrighted images. You must have permission to use them. See Related Post: Where to Find Free Images for Blog Posts?
- Create different sized images for sharing on different social media. Create at least one vertical image for Pinterest.

HOW TO WRITE THE PERFECT BLOG POST: ADD VIDEO(S)
This is a huge advantage that most bloggers do not take advantage of. Adding a video:
- Increases engagement on your blog
- Keeps visitors on your site longer (improves bounce rate)
- Builds trust (if you are in the video)
What’s more, you will be building a channel on YouTube and ranking for keywords there. That is “double for your trouble.” Double exposure.
Adding your blog post link to the description of the YouTube video gives a powerful boost to your blog post.
Interestingly, at the same time, by embedding the video on your blog post, you also create a backlink to your YouTube video, giving it (the video) a boost as well.
Finally, your video may end up ranking in Google Search as well!
What if you just use your cell phone and make a video introducing your blog post? That could work wonders.
To “put my money where my mouth is,” I will show you a simple example.
I wrote a review on the NewsToday WordPress theme. Because this blog is new, it is difficult to rank on the front page for many terms in this competitive niche. However, no such difficulty for video.
As you see below, my video ranks #1 for the keyword NewsToday theme SEO. So, although I lose out in one way, I make up for it in another.

HOW TO WRITE A PERFECT BLOG POST: ADD TAGS, CATEGORIES, FEATURED IMAGE
Now we are almost there, almost ready to publish our post. There are three things we need to do.
- Choose Category – choose the most relevant category for the post. Related posts will be together in categories.
- Add tags – adding tags groups related posts together even more tightly than in categories. What’s most important, is that Google will rank you for tags. I often get ranked for tags, resulting in much search traffic. Use keywords for tags.
- Add featured image.
Finally! After you have checked and are satisfied that the post is now “perfect,” it’s time to publish.
BONUS: PROMOTE YOUR PERFECT BLOG POST
Here is a bonus. After creating the perfect blog post, let us look at 2 ways to promote it immediately after publishing.
SHARE POSTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Now that you have just written the perfect blog post, it’s time to tell the world about your blog post. Share your post on social media using the relevant images.
Remember to create different image sizes for different networks. Use Canva to guide you on how to create the different sized images.
Sharing on social media will spread the word, and create communities of interested readers.
For search engines, social media posts are a strong ranking signal.

PROMOTE SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS
You will then need to promote these posts on social media. See how to utilize groups to boost your social media presence for free.
Additionally, you can promote these posts using paid advertising on the different social media channels.
Finally, the perfect blog post will need backlinks from other websites or blogs. This is the strongest SEO signal.
Simple strategy? Comment on other blogs and leave the blog post URL as your URL. This is why it is important to use keywords in URL.
